Cost-cutting translations are introducing errors and putting refugees at risk

This investigation focused on the use of AI translation by humanitarian aid organizations and federal immigration agencies. I documented the case of a rejected asylum claim due to errors introduced into an application by machine translation, and exposed chronic problems with AI translations of Pashto and Dari during the Afghan refugee crisis.

I appeared on PBS Newshour, NPR’s The World, and PRX’s Things That Go Boom to discuss my reporting.
